I read about an interesting, new technology recently in a newspaper article. Nanotechnology Victoria, a venture between Monash University, Swinburne University of Technology and RMIT University, is developing drug-dispensing jewellery. Necklaces, rings and earrings are designed to inject drugs over a long period of time. Where the jewellery touches the skin, a device administers the drug through thousands of tiny needles. However, it is painless! This would be a great thing for people who regularly use drugs like diabetics. Bright, plastic jewellery can be made for children and silver or gold for adults. This technology still needs to go through clinical trials. It may not be commercially available until at least another five years. It costs $450,000 to develop. The technology is called MicroArray Patch delivery system (MAP).
